Expert Consultation Workshop on the Role of Herbal, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (HMAPs) in Improving the Livelihood of the Rural Poor in the NENA Region: Challenges, Constraints, Prospects and Strategic Directions, ICARDA Headquarters, Aleppo, Syria July 10-12, 2007Wild garlic from Central Asia

A Regional Expert Workshop on the ‘Role of Herbal, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (HMAPs) in Improving the Livelihoods of the Rural Poor’ was held at ICARDA on 10-12 June 2007, jointly organized by ICARDA and IFAD. There were 56 participants from 23 countries, representing, research, development, international and regional institutions, and NGOs. The discussions covered various aeas: constraints and opportunities or HMAP collection, production nd marketing; comparative advantages and market potentials; success stories; ongoing initiatives and future strategies. The participants agreed on the need to strengthen existing national and regional initiatives and to establish a global network on HMAPs for the dry reas, in collaboration with the Global Horticulture Initiative (GlobalHort) and other international centers.

The GlobalHort Executive Secretary, Dr. R. Kahane, gave the presentation, Opportunities in Horticulture, at the meeting in Aleppo . Other presentation are listed in the agenda.
